Christmas on Rue Champigny
Christmas on Rue Champigny
This watercolour was commissioned by the Montreal financial services firm ASSURART Inc. for their 2020 company holiday card. It was very much inspired by the magical winter scenes by the Japanese printmaking artist Hasui Kawase (1883-1957). Although the image is based on photographs that I took on rue Champigny in the neighbourhood of Côte-Saint-Paul near where I live, I had to add quite a bit of…

because i spent so many hours reading through hashihime i deserve to write my opinions out
spoilers behind the cut because the english version came out somewhat recently...
i definitely started looking at spoilers kind of after the first route (which???? i kind of hate that they forced you through routes although the “true” end kind of makes this make more sense) and don’t remember where, but kept reading that the first route was the “true” route because of how ingrained it was with all the other routes
liked the first route because i’m a sucker for childhood friends/unrequited loves, so it’s no surprise i also liked the second route and truly believe a route where they could be a poly threesome would have been Ideal
third route i knew was going to be problematic and it was p short but also by this point i was skimming through the auto so maybe if i had read through everything like the first route i would be like “this makes sense”. but it was kind of disjointed and also the ending? i had to read a review that explained how they could have time travelled that far back and was like OOOH yeah i guess EVERYTHING in the game is a foreshadow but yeah...not sure what the point of that was
fourth route was also similarly baffling but by that point i was like ok that’s fine
fifth route and “true” end was just....the only thing it has going is that it completely redeems why everything went to absolute SHIT after kawase’s route. like the first two routes weren’t perfect and def had plot holes i was expecting to be filled in the latter routes (spoiler: i still feel like we’re missing key points even at the end of the game). writing turned into a crapshoot because main was just creating shit out of thin air and probably got tired after the third iteration? okay, i can buy that
people seem confused about kaoru being main’s “son” but i don’t think it works that way in this route or at least it’s bad writing. main says he randomly met kaoru on the streets and just had him around but according to the other routes he’s a kid that was picked up after an earthquake. but if we take this route as the true ending, then kaoru has to be a rando because 1) if everything else was a story then there’s no way main could have time skipped and thus picked up a kid and 2) if we somehow accept that the kid traveled through time then we have to ignore the plotholes that grow out of that such as a) so the childhood friends were killed because there’s no way kids would have hung themselves and b) main’s mom is still dead despite her death being a direct result of time traveling being real???? so “true” route isn’t inc*st to me but is also disappointing for so many reasons because the love interest is FLAT and also is unrealistic and seems like just a convenient way to properly End a Story
that said, i wish they had done it well because that true ending being the true ending would have been great if it was executed right. the idea of not being able to jump through time to fix your mistakes, having to live with your loneliness (which the “true” end never really resolved, the main was STILL kind of living alone except it’s ok because he has one guy to fuck him), needing to face reality even if it’s hard is a good message. but there’s no way the writing as it is works. the result is a game where it felt like the writer was fired after writing the first two endings and then they had to scrape up the rest of it with an intern and someone who hasn’t read a book and have ideas about narrative structures
that said 2, i would recommend but begrudgingly. didn’t pay, but it def is a game to buy once the cost goes down. it’s not a $35 game (it is if you care about music, relatively regularly good art (decensored), and literal HOURS spent to complete it), but it is a $15-20 game for the plot and attempt to be innovative. the plot and twists are certainly new but definitely room for improvement
#liveblogging#a lengthy review because i need to get this out#this isn't a hot take i think most people share this sentiment

UMIHARA KAWASE FRESH! WILL BE SERVED UP TO NINTENDO SWITCHTM PLAYERS ON JULY 9
Popular Japanese Platformer Series Offers a ‘Fresh’ New Recipe For Western Fans
SANTA ANA, California, March 13, 2019 — Nicalis, Inc. today announced a new partnership with Japanese developer Studio Saizensen to bring Umihara Kawase Fresh! to Nintendo SwitchTM in North America and Europe on July 9, 2019. A fresh new chapter in the storied series, Umihara Kawase Fresh! features open-world platforming gameplay starring a young girl who uses her fishing lure as a grappling hook, allowing her to progress through the quaint frontier town of Kingness.
Kawase is a traveling chef who has embarked on many magical adventures in the past. In Umihara Kawase Fresh!, she will put her navigating, grappling and cooking skills to the ultimate test as she completes various quests and discovers the secrets of Kingness, a town that is new to her yet somehow familiar.
Players will need to jump, climb, swing and slingshot their way across platforms all over town in order to clear goals and reach a specific destination to advance to the next quest. Each completed quest can be replayed in Time Attack mode, where a timer is added to let players compete for the best times in online leaderboard rankings.
Along the way, Kawase can use the lure to collect enemies and various food ingredients to store in her magical backpack. Combining ingredients with special recipes creates dishes that can be consumed to earn temporary special abilities, like jumping higher or being able to survive underwater for a longer time. The game also includes two additional playable characters: Cotton from the scrolling shooter Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams and another storied character yet to be announced.
